John Beidler, Ph.D.

Professor Emeritus

I am saddened to inform you of the passing of Professor Emeritus John (Jack) A. Beidler, Ph.D. He passed away on December 28, 2021, at Regional Hospital in Scranton.

Dr. Beidler served as a professor at Scranton for more than 50 years. He joined the faculty in 1964, teaching in mathematics as well as the Computing Sciences Department, which he co-founded in 1970 with support from the National Science Foundation for the purchase of equipment, making Scranton one of the first Jesuit computer science programs in the country. He was interim dean of the College of Arts and Sciences on a few occasions, and has, in some manner, contributed to the success of 1200+ alumni. At the time of his retirement, he was the longest-tenured professor. Dr. Beidler wrote multiple computer science textbooks and helped to create the Eastern Small College Computing Conference. He was also awarded multiple grants with GTE in Cambridge and Naval Air Development in Norfolk and involved many faculty and students in his work and success.

A native of Allentown, Dr. Beidler earned his bachelor’s degree from King’s College in Wilkes-Barre, his master’s degree from Lehigh University and his doctorate from the Pennsylvania State University.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Pat. He is survived by four children, grandchildren and other family members.
