Nostalgia and Notable Moments

Members of the Class of 1976 reunited at The University of Scranton's Class of 2026 undergraduate commencement ceremony. The landmark graduating class was the University's first undergraduate, full-time student class to include women.

A trailblazing member of a landmark graduating class at The University of Scranton, Karen L. Pennington, Ph.D. ’76, G’83, H’15 returned to deliver remarks as the keynote speaker at this year’s undergraduate and graduate commencement ceremonies, which brought thousands of guests to campus on Memorial Day weekend. Notably, her undergraduate Class of 1976 was the University’s first undergraduate, full-time student class to include women.

Dr. Pennington’s 40-plus-year career in higher education administration, prior to retiring in 2021, included 22 years as vice president for student development and campus life at Montclair State University.
