When the Office of Alumni Engagement challenged social media followers to submit a “Scrantastic” pumpkin for this year’s Pumpkin Carving Contest, Emily Johnson DeSarno ’14, G’14 did not disappoint. A former Presidential Scholar, DeSarno decided to turn her jack-o-lantern into one of her favorite Jesuits, University President Scott R. Pilarz, S.J.

“The man, the myth, the legend,” wrote Emily Johnson DeSarno ’14, G’14 of the Fr. Pilarz pumpkin she carved.

“The man, the myth, the legend,” wrote DeSarno, with her photo submission of the Pilarz pumpkin. Not only did DeSarno take home first place in the contest, but photos of the prize-winning pumpkin quickly attracted the attention of more than one Jesuit e-newsletter.

“I don’t know how many other Jesuits can say they’ve been on a pumpkin before,” said Father Pilarz, who was humbled and delighted by Emily’s creative tribute.
