From helping their low-income neighbors with their tax returns to sweeping the streets of Scranton, University students are singularly devoted to service. Their efforts landed Scranton on a prestigious list. The University was among just 766 higher education institutions nationwide named to the 2014 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. The University was named to the honor roll for three of four categories:
- Economic opportunity, acknowledging programs that build economic independence, increase family stability and create more sustainable, resilient communities;
- Education, recognizing efforts that improve educational outcomes for children and youth; and
- General service, honoring efforts that improve the quality of life of community residents, particularly low-income individuals.
During the 2013-2014 academic year, 2,853 University students volunteered approximately 175,000 hours.
The Corporation for National and Community Service oversees the honor roll in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, as well as the American Council on Education, Campus Compact and the Interfaith Youth Core.
