A man who left a profound impact on the sport he loved was honored posthumously at this year’s Carlesimo Golf Tournament and Award Dinner.
The late Dave Gavitt, one of the architects of modern college basketball and a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, was recognized at the fundraising event, held June 8 at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey. Gavitt’s wife, Julie, and the couple’s son, Dan, accepted the award on his behalf before more than 220 guests, including keynote speaker P.J. Carlesimo and other members of the Carlesimo family.
Gavitt served the game in many ways, including founding the Big East Conference and acting as its inaugural commissioner. He was also past president of USA Basketball, head men’s basketball coach at Providence College and chairperson of the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee.
Named in honor of Peter A. Carlesimo, former University of Scranton coach and athletics director, the Carlesimo Golf Tournament and Award Dinner celebrates athletics at the University and honors a person who has made special contributions to athletics and Catholic education. The event raised nearly $100,000 for athletics at Scranton and will help provide a transformational experience for the University’s student athletes.
