On May 30, Col. James F. Cummings, M.D. ’88, director at the Department of Defense’s (DoD) Global Emerging Infection Surveillance and Response System, was the principal speaker for graduate commencement.
“Know yourselves, be true to yourself, follow your passions. ...Set the world on fire,” Dr. Cummings said in his address. “This great concept, from Saint Ignatius, was directed to his Jesuits when going out into the world on their missions. The same charge is given to you today: to go and set the world on fire. Take that fire in your belly, that spark of enthusiasm, that flame of the Holy Spirit, and let it spread like a wildfire throughout the world. Fire jumps gaps, it spreads quickly, and changes whatever it touches. You being ‘The Difference’ will set the world ablaze.”
On May 31, Scott R. Pilarz, S.J., the 24th president of The University of Scranton and current president of Georgetown Preparatory School in Washington, D.C., spoke to the undergraduates.
Father Pilarz described his participation in the University’s commencement as “pure joy,” saying, “I am at a place that will always be my home.”
In his address, peppered with quotes from rock stars and poets, he told graduates of the ‘wisdom’ their Jesuit education provides. “I use the word wisdom quite deliberately when I am talking about the kind of education you have received here,” said Fr. Pilarz, who used a scene from the 1980 film “Atlantic City” to illustrate the difference between “information” and “wisdom.”
