Anthony Duchnowski

Year: Junior
Hometown: Dunmore
Position: Infielder
Major: Secondary Education-Latin & Classical Language-Latin

Q: Your father, Anthony ’80, graduated from Scranton. Was there any pressure to follow in his footsteps?
A: He had great success here both academically and athletically, and I feel nothing would make him prouder than to imitate that success.

Q: Your nickname is Dutch, right? How many of your teammates can correctly spell Duchnowski?
A: I do see a lot of “Dutchnowski” misspellings, but I have confidence that (most of) my teammates would spell it right.

Q: You grew up in Dunmore, right? How long is your commute from home to campus?
A: Yes, I’ve lived in Dunmore my whole life. My drive is no more than 5-10 minutes.

Q: When did you realize you wanted to play baseball in college?
A: Given my lifelong enjoyment of the game and success in high school, I didn’t even think twice about it.

Q: Latin is a somewhat uncommon major. What did you select it?
A: I’d say it’s very uncommon. I was very successful in Latin throughout high school, and once I began tutoring my peers in it, I realized I had a knack for explaining and teaching it. I also owe a lot to my high school Latin teacher, who was an excellent role model for how influential a good teacher can be.

Q: What is your favorite moment as a Scranton athlete?
A: Sweeping Catholic at home in 2011. They’re always a competitive opponent, so those three wins really established us as a force to be reckoned with in the conference.

Q: What is your favorite place on campus?
A: The fifth floor of St. Thomas, since I spend most of my time there with work-study, tutoring or radio.

Q: Who was your favorite athlete growing up?
A: Paul O’Neill; besides the fact that he was wildly entertaining, he displayed great intensity and an unending desire to succeed.

Q: Facebook or Twitter?
A: Facebook. No one wants to hear what I have to say every 10 minutes.

Q: Favorite movie?
A: "The Big Lebowski," hands down.

Q: Favorite musician or musical group?
A: I like a lot of 90s rock like Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden.

Q: Describe yourself in one word?
A: Busy

Q: Hobbies other than baseball?
A: I have a radio show on Scranton’s WUSR FM, I play piano and bass guitar when there’s time, and this fall I got into fantasy football.
