Beyond the Numbers: Julia Crilly '15

Athletics always seems to come down to what’s measurable: wins and losses, distances and yards, and minutes and seconds. But those methods don’t accurately gauge the student-athletes at The University of Scranton like Julia Crilly '15.

Year: Sophomore
Hometown: Rochester, N.Y.
Position: Outside Hitter
Major: Nursing

Q: After a terrific first season, you were named Landmark Conference Rookie of the Year. When did you realize you were having a good season?

A: I actually didn’t really realize how well I had done until after the season ended. During the season I just think of the areas I can improve upon and I always think that I can do better than what I have done.

Q: You are from Rochester, N.Y., and played volleyball and basketball, right? Do Rochester schools even offer outdoor sports?

A: Haha! I have played basketball since I was eight and volleyball since I was 13. Rochester does have outdoor sports. I actually used to play softball as well during high school, but
I prefer the indoor sports because then you don’t have to deal with the weather.

Q: You led the Royals in kills (332) and attacks (1015) last season. Why do volleyball statistics sound so deadly?

A: I have no idea, I couldn’t tell you.

Q: When did you realize you wanted to play volleyball in college?

A: Probably after my sophomore year I decided I wanted to pursue volleyball in college, but I didn’t know what division I wanted to play in, which I decided my senior year.

Q: If you had a choice between playing indoor volleyball or beach volleyball, which one would you choose and why?

A: That’s a tough choice because I love both indoor and beach. Beach is fun because you’re in the sand and most of the time it’s sunny while you play; but I also like indoor because it’s much easier to jump and I originally started with volleyball by playing indoor.

Q: Because of the nature of the sport, volleyball matches can sometimes run on seemingly forever. How long is the longest match you’ve ever played in?

A: The longest match I have played was about two-and-a-half hours. It was a five-game match and each game had a two-point differential, so most of the games went over the normal 25 points because neither team could get the two points in a row to win.

Q: What is the most challenging course you’ve taken at Scranton?

A: I would have to say chemistry. That’s not my favorite subject and I had to work extra hard in that class to do well.

Q: Hobbies other than volleyball?

A: Working out, reading, hanging out with my friends, listening to music, wakeboarding, playing all different sports.

Q: On Facebook, you are quoted as saying, “There is no better day than today.” What does this mean to you?

A: That you should enjoy the day that you have; don’t wish it away because you never know if you will get another one.

Q: Favorite movie?

A: The Lion King. It’s a classic and never gets old.

Q: Favorite musician or musical group?

A: I actually like all kinds of music, especially country.  My favorite country artist is Carrie Underwood.

Q: What is your favorite place on campus?

A: My favorite place would have to be my bed!

Q: Tell us one thing only friends and family know about you?

A: One thing is that I get random hiccups; I never have more than three hiccups in a row. I usually just get one hiccup and that’s it.
